Weeks 9-10: two-hand coordination ยท coordination
Melody over left-hand drone
Keep one hand steady while the other plays a melody.
Why this matters
A single sustained left-hand note under a right-hand melody is the gentlest intro to multi-voice playing. The drone keeps the harmony grounded so your ear has space to track the melody as a separate line.
What you should be able to do
Play 4 eight-bar melodies over a repeated left-hand tonic with steady tempo.
Estimated focus time: 1.75h
How to practice this on your piano today
- 1. Hold middle C with the left thumb. Don't let it go.
- 2. With your right hand on C-D-E-F-G, play the first phrase of 'Mary Had a Little Lamb' (E-D-C-D-E-E-E).
- 3. The drone never stops; it grounds the melody.
- 4. Try with different drones: holding G under a melody starting on G's scale.
- 5. Aim for 4 eight-bar melodies over a steady left-hand drone.
