Weeks 5-6: reading and touch · reading
Four-bar sight reading
Read a tiny piece without stopping after every miss.
Why this matters
Sight reading is the only way to learn pieces faster than note-by-note. The skill is keeping the pulse, not getting every note.
What you should be able to do
Play 4 unseen four-bar examples with steady pulse and at least 85% correct notes.
Estimated focus time: 2h
How to practice this on your piano today
- 1. Pick an unfamiliar 4-bar phrase from a beginner book.
- 2. Set the metronome at 60 BPM. Play through ONCE without stopping. Even if you mess up, keep going.
- 3. Note where you slipped, but don't replay yet — try a NEW 4-bar phrase next.
- 4. Aim for 4 unseen phrases per session, 85%+ correct notes.
- 5. Track which interval shapes still feel unfamiliar.
