Weeks 5-6: reading and touch · reading

Four-bar sight reading

Read a tiny piece without stopping after every miss.

Why this matters

Sight reading is the only way to learn pieces faster than note-by-note. The skill is keeping the pulse, not getting every note.

What you should be able to do

Play 4 unseen four-bar examples with steady pulse and at least 85% correct notes.

Estimated focus time: 2h

How to practice this on your piano today

  1. 1. Pick an unfamiliar 4-bar phrase from a beginner book.
  2. 2. Set the metronome at 60 BPM. Play through ONCE without stopping. Even if you mess up, keep going.
  3. 3. Note where you slipped, but don't replay yet — try a NEW 4-bar phrase next.
  4. 4. Aim for 4 unseen phrases per session, 85%+ correct notes.
  5. 5. Track which interval shapes still feel unfamiliar.
