Weeks 9-10: two-hand coordination · coordination
Two-hand rhythm independence
Play different rhythms in each hand while counting out loud.
Why this matters
The hands often play different rhythms — quarter notes in one hand and eighths in the other. Independence is the hardest single skill in piano, and the slow path through it (counting out loud, hands separately, then together) is what unlocks the whole literature.
What you should be able to do
Play 6 two-hand rhythm studies with correct entrances, releases, and spoken counts.
Estimated focus time: 2.25h
How to practice this on your piano today
- 1. Right hand: tap quarter notes on a key. Left hand: tap two eighth notes per beat.
- 2. Count out loud: '1-and-2-and-3-and-4-and'. Right hand on each count, left on every syllable.
- 3. Switch hands.
- 4. Try harder ratios: 3 against 4 (right hand triplets, left hand quarters).
- 5. Aim for 6 clean two-hand rhythm studies.
